Legend of Korra Recap: Turn of the Tide

Good news everyone! This week there was an episode BEFORE the one-hour season finale. Nickelodeon did a poor job at mentioning that. Either way, we got another episode to watch and this one is hardcore! Let’s do this.

Korra is back on Air Temple Island and recovering from last episode’s madness, with Mako watching over her and Asami piecing together unpleasant realizations. Tenzin returns to Pema and the Flying Airbenders to let them know things will be okay now. It’s the quiet before the storm.

Korra gives everyone a rundown of what happened on her end from last episode and Tenzin worries that the endgame is near. Asami finally lays it out to Mako with how he is acting inappropriately if they want to be in a relationship, she blames the right person for this by going after Mako. I’m glad we don’t get a “not blame the person you are dating” in such a situation.

Tenzin has to go meet with the Council and asks Lin to watch out for Pema and the Flying Airbenders. My two favorite characters get to interact here, Meelo and Lin hanging out. Both react accordingly and it is glorious.

First time they meet in the show and of course it’s wonderful.

The Fire Nation Council rep is taken down in a scene that is reminiscent to The Dark Knight for me, they trick her and take her down. No death, just kidnapping and most likely de-bending, you know… the “kid-friendly” stuff.

Tenzin is about to be taken out when suddenly his beard-sense (seriously, his beard twitches and he dodges just in time). Tenzin gets some nice fight scenes here, airbending is fun to see. Equalist airships begin to attack the city and all at Air Temple Island can see it.

Team Avatar heads into the city and find the car where Korra last left it, crashed into a pole and covered in parking tickets. Asami is still giving Mako the cold shoulder since he refuses to discuss their situation and Team Avatar is off!

Tenzin really throws down in this episode.

Tenzin meets up with the Metalbenders and sends a wire to the general of the United Republic Forces (we’ll get back to this). The police station is attacked with gas and power being taken out, but Tenzin’s airbending gets them out safe, only to have to face Mecha-Tanks. Mecha-Tanks with magnetic arms to grab the armored cops. Tenzin starts blasting them away but is overwhelmed on his own, thankfully Team Avatar arrives to help. Bolin makes a ramp for Asami to sacrifice Team AvaCar (shut up, that’s the name I chose for it) into a Mecha-Tank. Bolin, Korra, and Mako fight the Mecha-Tanks while Asami frees Tenzin and the others. Tenzin is able to blast one Mecha-Tank right on top of a building, he just up and blasts it up about 200 feet in the air. Then everyone sees that airships are heading to Air Temple Island.

Lin tries to keep everyone calm, but Pema is going into labor now. The White Lotus are taken out in quick order while Lin waits to hold them off. Lin takes out several but the Lieutenant’s tazer batons shock her wires, knocking her down. Then Jinora shows up with a great line (“Get away from my dad’s ex-girlfriend), taking out the Lieutenant, with Ikki following up on an Air Scooter to take out some more, finally Meelo shows up and… fartbends the remaining Equalists into submission.

A face you don’t want to be up against in the heat of battle.

Team Avatar arrives just in time for Tenzin to meet his wife and new son, Rohan. The Flying Airbenders are so sweet in this moment. Korra alerts them that more airships are coming. Tenzin says he has to take his family to safety, Lin agrees and goes with them to help protect the last Airbenders. Korra realizes that she must be patient and agrees to go with the rest of Team Avatar into hiding.

Baby Rohan has a tough world to be born into, but he’s got one heck of a family to help him out and each other.

The White Lotus hold of the Equalists allowing Team Avatar to escape of Naga, where the Lieutenant is smacked out of the air by Naga when he tries to attack them. They escape underwater using the waterbending submarine swim technique.

While Lin, Tenzin, and the Flying Airbenders are fleeing, two airships approach them. Lin realizes what she must do, she leaves them behind, and metalbends one entire airship apart. While she is in the middle of repeating her attack on the other, she is captured. I was screaming at this point. Meelo says “That lady is my hero”, Tenzin agrees, and so do I.

Team Avatar is hiding out in the sewers. Amon has Lin on Air Temple Island and offers her the chance to keep her bending if she rats out the locations of the others. Lin refuses, naturally, and… Amon takes her bending away. There has to be a way Korra can reverse it, she’ll have to go Avatar State and reverse some of those who have lost it. Come on, please.

I actually screamed “No!” at the television when this happened.

Meanwhile, a man on a ship is alerted of Tenzin’s wire. He lets it be known that in three days time, he will be there ready to win back Republic City with her. He is addressed as General Iroh (uncle and father figure to Zuko), looks similar to Zuko, and is voiced by Dante Basco (voice of Zuko). We see that he has a fleet of ships, things are about to get interesting.

General Iroh looks like he is ready to take out so Equalists.

So there we go, I am crushed at what has happen to Lin. Elated to see the Flying Airbenders fight back and help. Glad to see baby Rohan is with a loving family even in a trying time. Korra and the rest of Team Avatar is in a bad way having to flee and losing one of their own. General Iroh may help Korra turn the battle back in their favor though. What will happen to Team Avatar, benders, Lin, and all people of Republic City? (They were bombing the city! Bender and non-bender alike would be dying! Amon is a murderous beast now.)

Aside from the cramming of the love triangle down our collective throats, this episode was fantastic. The ending especially had me on the edge of my seat, from Lin sacrificing herself, to the introduction of General Iroh. For the first time it actually filled me with excitement for the next episode.
